MIDDLETON, WI - The Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association (FSGA) applauds the state of Illinois for passing a fantasy sports law that confirms the legality of paid fantasy sports contests with strong consumer protection measures.

“The fantasy sports industry has taken a significant step forward with another large state choosing to embrace fantasy sports,” said FSGA Chair Brandon Loeschner. “Despite the many changes in the marketplace the past decade, paid fantasy sports contests remain tremendously popular and have shown they can be well regulated at the state level.”

Illinois becomes the 28th state, along with Puerto Rico, to confirm fantasy sports are legal games of skill. The new law adds important consumer protection measures and includes reasonable registration fees. It also includes a graduated fee structure that allows smaller operators and startups to have an easier path to do business in the state. 

Illinois joins the other states that have shown that paid fantasy sports contests can be effectively regulated and contribute meaningful revenue to state governments with reasonable fees and taxation. 

The FSGA continues to advocate for laws that both confirm the legality of fantasy sports and add needed consumer protection measures. It looks forward to working with the Illinois Gaming Board to further develop regulations and ensure Illinois residents can continue to play the games they love.
